Working Farm
Heggatt Estate was traditionally made up of 5 tenanted farms until the 1960s. Changes in agriculture then lead to their amalgamation, since which they have been managed as a single farm by the Estate.
Sat between Coltishall, Horstead and the River Bure on the edge of the Norfolk Broads. Our farm is a blend of traditional crop rotation and livestock.
Unique to this area- the fields are still small with traditional hedging and double hedging along old lokes – all enhancing the rich biodiversity across the estate.
Crop & Livestock
Benefitting from the free draining sandy loam soil, we rotate high value crops including; potatoes, parsnips and onions with grains like malting and seed barley.
The Estate is also home to outdoor reared free range Christmas turkeys, outdoor pigs, sheep and cattle; all rotating around the farm.
Ecology of the Estate
The Heggatt Hall Estate is comprised of extensive marshland, the river Bure and fantastic hedgerow habitats across the working farm. Additionally we have 125 acres of mixed woodland with ancient oaks and sweet chestnuts dating back over 600 years.
For over a decade we have been working hard protect the environment which is is now supported by a government led high level stewardship scheme. This has further enabled us to plant seed heavy wildflower borders around fields and wild seed cover crops.
Promoting Wildlife
With regular sightings of Tawny, Barn Owls, Kestrels, Buzzards, Kingfishers, Spotted and Green Woodpeckers, we’re excited to see what new wildlife will make the Heggatt Hall Estate they’re home next. All wildlife benefits from the unique and quiet environment and situation of the estate which is flanked by marshland and river Bure.
